Standard Work Example

Problem Statement

Select a project and perform the stakeholder analysis for that project.

How to perform analysis

  1. Click on the Sigma Magic button on the Excel toolbar.
  2. Click on the New button to create a new project.
Step 2: Add the analysis template
  1. Click on the Tool Wizard to add the analysis template.
  2. Click on Lean and then Standard Work.

Step 3: Specify analysis options
A new worksheet will be added to your workbook. Analysis Setup will be automatically opened, in the setup tab specify the number tasks.

Click on Checklist , then the input dialog box asks a set of questions regarding Standard Work you are creating.

Finally, click on Verify tab to ensure all the inputs are okay and shown in a green checkmark.

Step 4: Generate analysis results
Click on Compute Outputs to update the outputs. A sample screenshot of the standard work document is shown below.

Interpreting results

  1. Takt Time: 90 seconds (customer demand rate).
  2. Cycle Time (CT): 95 seconds (time for one unit of the process). Cycle time is more than takt time; therefore, there could be a bottleneck or inefficiency.
  3. The process is labor intensive and has walking time in all the steps. A few steps consist of automated activities. The stepwise breakdown is as follows:
    1. Step 1: Take Order: 20 sec labor + 5 sec walk.
    2. Step 2: Prep lemons 15sec handwork + 5sec walking
    3. Step 3: Juice lemons 5sec handwork + 10 sec automatic + 5 sec walking
    4. Step 4: Mix ingredients 15sec handwork + 5sec walking
    5. Step 5: Serve customer 10sec handwork + 5 sec walking.
  4. The process cycle time is 95 seconds, whereas the takt time is 90 seconds. This can easily delay the fulfillment of customer demand especially during peak demand periods.
  5. 15 seconds of the manual effort go into Step 4 (Mix Ingredients). This might be a bottlenecks if all orders are executed simultaneously.
  6. Walking time would sum up to 25 seconds at 5 seconds per step. Reducing the walking distances of the workplace might save more time and become efficient.
